3 examples of pregnancy discrimination in the workplace

On Behalf of | Jul 2, 2024 | Pregnancy Discrimination

Pregnancy can be an exciting phase in life. Yet, balancing your pregnancy with your career is not always easy.

As such, employers are expected to be considerate and allow their pregnant employees a fair and accommodating work environment. However, pregnancy discrimination can still occur, despite legal protections.

1. Firing pregnant workers

An unfortunate form of pregnancy discrimination is the termination of pregnant workers solely because of their pregnancy or related conditions. It can happen even when the employee is performing well and has no legitimate reason for dismissal. Such actions not only harm the individual financially and emotionally but also undermine workplace equality and fairness.

2. Denying reasonable accommodations

A pregnant employee may not be as nimble and capable of performing certain physical tasks as before, requiring reasonable accommodations such as adjusted duties, flexible work hours or additional breaks. However, some employers may deny these accommodations, insisting that the employee continue to perform at the same level as before pregnancy without considering the physiological changes and potential risks involved.

3. Demotions targeting pregnant workers

Pregnant employees may also face unfair demotions or reductions in responsibilities solely based on their pregnancy status. This type of discrimination occurs when employers assume that pregnancy will impair job performance or that pregnant employees will be less committed to their roles. Such actions can undermine the employee’s career advancement opportunities and encourage a hostile work environment, contrary to the protections guaranteed by laws prohibiting pregnancy discrimination.

If you are facing discrimination at your workplace simply because you are pregnant, you may want to consider pursuing legal avenues to protect your rights and seek justice.
